These sprightly board books get it just right for the pre-preschool set. Both use ever-popular subjects (animals), focus on endearing activities (making noise and getting about), and offer text that encourages children to get right in the swing of things. In Barn Taback's saucy animals make sounds as the words, which run along the bright green border at the bottom of the page, ask, "Can you bleat like a goat? Moo like a cow?" and so on until a final spread shows all animals together, issuing forth a cacophony of sound. In the equally inviting Parade, zoo animals are busy marching, jumping, and sauntering. Both books provide a veritable Noah's ark set against pure Popsicle-colored backgrounds. The pen-outlined figures are just the right size for young eyes. Toddlers, alone and in groups, will be happy to accept the noisy, bouncy invitations these books offer.

Harriet Ziefert and Caldecott Honor artist Simms Taback team up for two oversize board books designed to encourage toddlers to join in with animal noises and movements. "Can you baa like a sheep?/ Sing like a bird?/ Whinny like a horse ahead of the herd?" asks Noisy Barn! While Zoo Parade! invites youngsters to get on their feet: "Can you prance like a lion?/ Dance like a gazelle?/ Run like a baboon with a high-pitched yell?" Taback's signature black line and bright, bold colors add to the energy of the text.

A Boisterous Parade...
of farm animals on their way to the barn certainly can cause quite a stir. With the cow mooing, the piglet oinking, the duck quacking, the chickens pecking and the cat meowing, it's a wonder they arrive at all. When they all get to the barn, children will clamor to make their own animal noises.
